Ecobee is releasing a pilot program called Peak Relief in an attempt to catch up with Googles Nest “Time of Savings” feature. The principal is exactly the same; automatically adjust the energy output of your air conditioning based on electricity prices. During peak times of electricity rates, the Peak Relief feature will turn down the AC to avoid high costs. Ecobee has predicted that users will save an extra 10 percent through their smart thermostat. You must use electrical heating as opposed to gas.
This pilot program is currently limited in its use. Just selected thermostats in California, Arizona, and Ontario are using this feature. They clearly want to test the more extreme temperatures to get the best savings outcome to quote. Every little difference helps, and saving money is one of the driving forces of smart home technology!
