Philips Hue Bloom
The Philips Hue Bloom is designed to be your secret weapon when it comes to creating a mood in your smart home. The small and discreet profile of the Bloom makes it the perfect device to be hidden behind the sofa or TV in order to cast ambient light in that area. Setting the mood for your house party or adding more action to your movie night is an incredibly simple yet effective process with the Philips Hue Bloom.
The Bloom is part of the popular Philips Hue lighting system, which is great if you already have their smart hub set up on your home network. However, if you are not a Philips Hue user then you will require a Philips Hue Bridge to get the Bloom working. Despite seeming quite expensive at $59.99, the Bridge is a worthwhile investment if you choose to go down the Philips Hue route. There generally seems to be a theme within smart lighting products that shows brands that use smart home hubs or requires there own hub have more connection methods and greater compatibility with other systems and devices.

The Philips Hue Bloom is designed to provide a dim subtle glow, ideally placed behind a sofa facing a wall for a spotlight effect. This is reflected by the fact it is only 120 lumens compared to 800 lumens in Philips Hue smart bulbs, so anyone looking for something to light up a room should consider another product. Bloom utilizes Philips colored LED technology to give you an option of 16 million colors and a range of temperatures of white. Daytime scheduling of white temperatures is a common application of smart lighting as these different shades feed into human physiology and help fine tune your circadian rhythm to wake up quickly and smoothly and wind down in the evening. The front face of the lamp features a large plastic lens that diffuses light creating a warm ambient atmosphere. We are particularly impressed with the metal casing and impressive build quality, giving a substantial feel to the product. Much like the other range of Hue products the setup is quick and easy (given you have a bridge) and the dedicated app makes controlling the light fun and intuitive. If you already have other Philips Hue products installed then this process is especially easy as the configuration and infrastructure of the system will be in place.
You are not just limited to the huge range of colours, the app allows you to sync the Bloom to your music, films and gaming much like the Philips Hue White and Color Ambience smart bulbs. For those of you who spend frequent trips away from home you can control your lights remotely, for security or so your home is lit on your arrival.
As per standard with Philips, the Bloom is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple Homekit and Google Home. Our Philips Hue product reviews all share many of the same positive features due to the superb functions and controls enabled by the Hue App. This means the extensive and outstanding compatibility, connection methods and general features such as scheduling, syncing and voice control are consistent among products.

The Philips Hue Bloom is not your conventional lamp, but is a great way of adding ambient light to your home. High quality construction and loads of useful functions make the bloom feel well placed in the Philips Hue family. The only downside we see in this little smart lamp is the need for a bridge, however, if you already set up with Hue the bloom is a worthwhile addition to your set-up. Additionally, you should not expect this to act as a bright lamp that will provide the majority of the light in whichever room its placed. It is a subtle piece of lighting for more of a glow and effect, rather than a strong source of light. For more info on setting up your smart lighting, check out our buyers guide.
