arlo vs arlo pro vs arlo pro 2 camera featuresField of Vision (FOV)

A benefit of the Arlo Pro 2 over the Arlo Pro is an additional 20° of the field of vision, which is the width of the recordable area. This additional twenty percent is going to be pretty useful, although camera placement and the total number of cameras is more important in covering a wider area. • Arlo Pro 2 has a wider FOV of 130°.
  • Arlo Pro has a FOV of 110°.

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 both have night vision.
  • Arlo Pro 2 night vision is slightly brighter.

4.Camera Detection Features

Arlo detection and record

Motion Detector

Infrared technology is built into the Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 for motion detection. This triggers the cameras to record a small burst of footage, making very accurate motion detection critical. The sensor detects when an object is warmer than its surrounding and therefore when it should be triggered to record. On your camera, you set the sensitivity level at a number from one to 100. If too high for your surroundings there could be excessive triggering and if too low their might not be enough. This requires trial and error to pinpoint the perfect level which depends on how busy the local area and field of vision is.

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 both have infrared motion detection.

Audio Detection

The Arlo Pro and Pro 2 have the capability to trigger capturing footage and sending notifications through an audio sensor. This is one of the key upgrades from the original Arlo as it adds a new dimension of surveillance and monitoring, and may get the camera triggered in situations where someone trespasses out of sight of the cameras.

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 both have audio detection.

Zone Recording

The Arlo Pro 2 can be set to focus on zones in their field of vision and only be triggered by motion in those areas, as opposed to the whole field of vision. The idea of this is to focus on an area such as a door which may be opened and prevent unnecessary notifications. Not a biggie but possibly useful.

  • Only the Arlo Pro 2 has zone recording.

Trigger lag time

Motion or audio detection will trigger the Arlo Pro or Arlo Pro 2 to record footage. The gap between these two events is the trigger lag time. It is important for this to be as small as possible to ensure footage is recorded when the triggering object or person was in the sight of the camera.

The Arlo Pro has a trigger lag time of around 2-3 seconds, which is pretty decent although no perfect. This is the same time the  Arlo Pro 2 has if it is being operated wirelessly. When plugged in the “Look Back Feature” continuously records to capture the 3 seconds prior to the trigger. The real problem with this is the fact it has to be plugged in which can be logistically difficult or unsightly.

  • Arlo Pro has trigger lag time of 2-3 seconds.
  • Arlo Pro 2 has “look back feature” which records these missed seconds.

Smart Siren

arlo smart siren

The Base Station that are part of the Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 systems have a loud siren built in to them. This can either be operated manually via the Arlo app or set to work automatically when audio or motion detection occurs.

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 both work with Alexa.

Video Resolution & Playback

The Arlo Pro records in 720p HD whilst the Arlo Pro 2 is a little more defined at 1080p HD. This is nice improvement although it certainly isn’t vital as long as the camera can articulately detect motion and recorded footage that can identify people. These aren’t the sort of films you want to watch with your family on movie night! They are there to deter and protect you in the face of unwanted individuals intruding on your property.

  • Arlo Pro records in 720p HD.
  • Arlo Pro 2 records in 1080p HD.

6.Storage Options

arlo cloud storage options

Free Cloud Storage

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 both have free weekly cloud storage option.

Arlo has a few paid options for extra cloud storage duration and the ability to connect more cameras. There are several packages available from $2.99 a month up to $14.99 a month. The most expensive package provides cloud storage for triggered events up to 60 days after and allows up to twenty cameras to be used for cloud storage.

The free option just allows six cameras, so if you want to add some new cameras to your smart camera system and keep your storage on the cloud, you must be prepared for this subscription cost.

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 bot have extended cloud storage options.

Local Storage

Local storage of footage is also available with the Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2. This is set up by plugging a USB storage device in the Arlo Pro base station and configuring the My Devices settings on the Arlo app.

  • Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 both have local storage options.

Continuous Recording

The Arlo Pro 2 has an option to continuously record 24/7 which also enables the look back feature. This requires the camera to be plugged in, which may not be feasible for outdoor cameras. This feature may offer additional comfort to those who want to protect a particular room in their home.

7.Other Features

arlo battery life and other features

You can expect to get 4-6 months of use from Arlo Pro depending how many triggered events are captured. The batteries of the Arlo Pro are rechargeable and will only take a couple of hours to charge when low on battery. The cameras incredibly lean use of energy is thanks to its ability to stay in standby more when not triggered.

The Arlo Pro 2 rechargeable batteries work in the same fashion as the Arlo Pro batteries, except they last for slightly less time on one charge.
